El Estado no podría existir si nuestra capacidad para determinar las condiciones de nuestra propia existencia, como individuos en libre asociación con las/os demás, no se nos hubiese sido quitada. Esta desposesión es la fundamental alienación social que provee las bases para toda dominación y explotación. Esta alienación puede ser correctamente rastreada en el surgimiento de la propiedad (y digo propiedad como tal, no como propiedad privada, ya que desde muy temprano gran parte de la propiedad era institucional- perteneciente al Estado). La propiedad puede ser definida como la demanda exclusiva de ciertos individuos e instituciones sobre herramientas, espacios y materiales necesarios para la existencia, haciéndolos inaccesibles a los demás. Este reclamo es reforzado por medio de la violencia explícita o implícita. Sin libertad para tomar lo necesario para crear sus vidas, las/os desposeídas/os están forzados a ajustarse a las condiciones determinadas por las/os auto-proclamadas/os dueñas/os de la propiedad, con la intención de asegurar su existencia, que se vuelve así una existencia en servidumbre. El Estado es la institucionalización de este proceso, que transforma la alienación de la capacidad de los individuos para determinar su propia existencia en acumulación de poder en las manos de unos pocos. The writings of Bruno Filippi offer something rare in anarchist writing — truly beautiful literature. I hope this comes across in my translations — where it does not, the fault is all mine. Filippi entered upon his brief life of revolt at he age of 15, in the midst of World War I, involving himself in anarchist anti-militarist activity. Several of his brief works reflect the dehumanizing effects of military life and participation in a slaughter that was qualitatively different from any war up to that time in the sheer capacity for destruction. The following essays examine several of the various institutions, structures, systems and relationships of domination and exploitation which define our current existence. These essays are not intended to be comprehensive nor to be final answers, but rather to be part of a discussion that I hope will go on in anarchist circles aimed at developing a specifically anarchist theoretical exploration of the reality we are facing. A great deal of the analysis that currently goes on in anarchist circles is dependent on marxist or postmodernist categories and concepts. These may indeed be useful, but to simply accept them a priori, without examining social reality in terms of our own specifically anarchist revolutionary project indicates an intellectual laziness. So I hope we can begin to discuss and examine the world in terms of our own projects, dreams and desires, certainly grasping all analyses that we find useful, but in order to create our own theoretical and practical revolutionary project.

Sadly, in recent years, too much of the writing coming out of social conflict is wrought with stiff, wooden language, a tired, dead language that seems to contradict the energy of the rebellions of which they speak. It is the language of militancy, not of freedom, not of individuality creating itself against all odds. Perhaps this is, in part, because many of the present-day conflicts spring from the harshness of the times; they are responses to the hardness of current social, political and economic realities. But how can a response in kind counter these realities? Shouldn’t the very method of our response reflect our rejection of these imposed realities?
Fin dai tempi in cui per la prima volta si è definito movimento radicale autonomo, l’anarchismo è stato associato alla sinistra. Un’associazione il più delle volte problematica. I militanti di sinistra con un incarico di potere (compresi quelli anarchici, come i capi della C.N.T. e della F.A.I. nella Spagna del 1936-37) hanno sempre considerato d’ostacolo ai propri programmi politici il fine anarchico della trasformazione totale della vita — e il conseguente principio secondo cui i fini dovrebbero essere già insiti nei mezzi di lotta impiegati. L’insorgenza reale è sempre scoppiata altrove rispetto a qualsivoglia programma politico e gli anarchici più coerenti hanno intravisto la possibilità di realizzare i loro sogni proprio in un luogo sconosciuto ed altro. Tuttavia, a più riprese, quando i fuochi dell’insurrezione si raffreddavano (e talvolta perfino mentre bruciavano ancora ardentemente, come nel 1936-37), i leader anarchici hanno finito coll’assumere il ruolo di «coscienza della sinistra». Ma se l’espansione dell’utopia anarchica ed i principi ad essa connessi sono stati un ostacolo agli schemi politici della sinistra, questi schemi hanno costituito un ben più pesante macigno attorno al collo del movimento anarchico, appesantendolo con quel “realismo” che non sa sognare.
