Solidarity with Silan Ozcelik

Silan Ozcelik is on trial for ‘terrorism’ for allegedly trying to make her way to support the Kurds defending Rojava from ISIS. She is currently on remand in Holloway Prison. Today a preliminary hearing in her case was held at the Old Bailey. 18 year old Silan appeared by video link from prison and her lawyer made an application for bail. However, her application was refused.

The charge against her was read out as “preparation for giving effect to an intention to commit acts of terrorism”, contrary to section 5 (1) (a) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

A provisional trial date was set for September 7th this year. Silan may spend the next few months on remand. Our solidarity is of paramount importance to ensure Silan goes free. It is important not to forget Silan over the coming months.

A protest was held outside the court, with demonstrators holding banners in solidarity with Rojava. Last month supporters held a solidarity demo outside Holloway prison.

Supporters posted this message online: “We say, emphatically, Free Silan Ozcelik immediately!“
