Italy – Communiqué from the Cassa Anti-repressione delle Alpi Occidentali concerning the police raids in Mentoulles and Cuneo

We receive and transmit a communiqué concerning the police raids
unleashed in March in Mentoulles and Cuneo and the investigation for
270bis against a number of comrades.
The framing of the investigation carried out by prosecutors Padalino and
Rinaudo, is based, like many others over the past few years, on the
hypothesis of a double level in political activity: one legal and
public, the other hidden and outlawed referring to vague illegal
actions.
What is new in this investigation is that it is pointing a finger at and
focussing on the activity of a solidarity fund for prisoners (in this
case the Cassa antirepressione delle Alpi Occidentali) and consequently
wants to put the practice of solidarity on trial.

Striking those who support revolutionary comrades deprived of their
freedom, obstructng solidarity with prisoners and breaking off their
relations and contacts with the outside, has an old worrying flavour.
To make prisoner support and the struggle against repression illegal is
one of the aspects of the inquisitorial strategy in the hands of judges
and investigators. This has already been tried in Italy years ago, and
in the Iberian Peninsula today as in the past.  The objective is to make
a clean sweep of any form of dissent and cancel out solidarity, apart
from that of pietism and assistance that obeys the criteria imposed by
the State so that the latter can have a free hand to suffocate social
conflict.
By striking solidarity funds they are trying to isolate prisoners,
threaten their families, friends and comrades, break their resistance.
The Fund of the Alps is an experience shared by many interested in the
question of prison, people who don’t see the Law as a value in itself;
it was born out of the need to constantly resist the blows of
repression, produce criticism of the prison system and guarantee support
to those who end up in jail or have other restrictive measures inflicted
on them.
As we are aware of the importance of keeping direct communication with
anyone who’s locked up and preventing them from getting isolated or
being abused and harassed, and being well aware that the activity of
resistance is not enough, we think that this activity is inseparable
from other practices and methods that share the same goals and are set
against the same enemies. We reject the investigators’ line of reasoning
that wants to identify some of us as those mainly responsible for this
activity and confirm our firm intention to continue the practice of
solidarity, which is one of the most important aspects of the struggle
and which we don’t intend to give up.
No investigation can make us forget or deny support to revolutionary
prisoners accused of trying to oppose the status quo, and to rebel
prisoners who become more numerous each day as they try to survive
amidst the increasingly narrow cogs of the system.
In a world where solidarity is becoming a crime, we can only declare
ourselves accomplices.
