June 30 saw the release of Alfredo Bonanno and Jean Weir after 100 day’s detention, leaving in prison leaving only one of the original 19 anarchist comrades arrested in the ‘blitz’ operation carried out by various sectors of the Italian police in Sicily and North Italy at the end of March. The comrade still in prison (now in the ‘special’ prison Fossombrone in Pesaro) is Massimo Gaspari, sentenced to 4 years 10 months for possession of explosives after 50 sticks of gelignite were found in his home.

Sus excesos han paseado la verdad por todos los rincones del país: hoy en día no hay nadie tan ingenuo o tan desvergonzado que se atreva a negar que nos encontramos bajo un despotismo tan duro, envilecedor y difícil de soportar como el que hubo en tiempos de Franco, y a medida que pasa el tiempo, será peor. Nosotros estamos ahora dispersos, cuando no desmoralizados. Hemos entablado una batalla que no supimos librar como debimos.

For all of its many flaws, I love Earth First! and most of the many projects that it has inspired, and I say that as someone fully aware of all the mistakes that have been made along the way. Those errors- everything from alliances with open racists like Ed Abbey to articles cheerleading famine in Africa- are ultimately what makes the history of Earth First! such a valuable roadmap for modern revolutionaries. Earth First!’s fuck-ups are at times so glaring that my hope is, after examining them, there is no way they could be made again.
