Joel was one of the antifascists that chose to physically defend the antiracist manifestation in Kärrtorp, Sweden, attacked by fascists. He acted in self defense but was sentenced to 5.5 years for attempted manslaughter, after his case was tried by the Court of Appeal.
Today, Joel is active within Föreningen Fånggruppen (Prisoner’s association) and is making the most out of his sentence by networking with other political prisoners and through educating people on the outside within the field of prison struggle and solidarity work. The work he is doing is important but his years spent behind bars is something that he will never get back. It is years of isolation from friends and loved ones, years without freedom and natural bonds. For most of us, such a situation is unimaginable but we are many who stand in solidarity with him and proclaim that antifascism is still self defense.
The least we can do is to collectively take on the fines he was sentenced to, on top of his sentence. The 40 000 SEK (€4270/$4700/£3000) is a burden that should not fall upon Joel as an individual but should be taken by us collectively – all of us who stand in solidarity with Joel and the other antifascists who stood up and defended the peaceful protest in Kärrtorp. Donating is a practical way of showing solidarity but none the less also a symbolic act highlighting that we stand united against fascism. The price of antifascist activism shall never be an individuals burden to carry alone but something that we all pay collectively as a movement.
