Calais: night 3, police attack with water cannon and rubber bullets

On Tuesday night (10-11 November) the cops came in force to attack the jungle, bringing water cannon and snatch squads and firing rubber bullets. This was a revenge attack after two nights of protests and heavy clashes on the 8th and 9th. We repost below a report on the night from Calais Migrant Solidarity.

This morning (12 November) the charity La Vie Active which is building the new concentration camp came into the jungle with a riot cop escort to announce that evictions are about to start. A major attack is expected tomorrow (13 November) or at the start of next week.

Last night the security services in Calais led a violent assault on the jungle refugee camp. This was an orchestrated police operation designed to continually provoke the residents of the camp. The police’s actions came after two previous nights of unrest and protest. The trigger for these previous nights of dissent, probably a manifestation by the far-right in the centre of Calais, under the auspices of the PEGIDA campaign, where a Qu’ran was burnt.

TIMELINE

22:00 the police started their operation
24:00 a water cannon was deployed to the front entrance of the Jungle
Before 00:30, at the other entrance to the camp, police deployed plain clothes ‘snatch squads’ to raid the area of the jungle inhabited by a mixed community of people with and without papers. Kidnapping at least 3 residents and bundling them into an unmarked police car.
01:37, protesting refugees were repeatedly shot with tear gas

After this the police deployed lethal force, using around 25 rounds of rubber bullets and several concussion grenades to exact revenge on the jungle for it’s acts of civil disobedience
At the same time four refugees were arrested at the front entrance, they were released again at 01:39
In total around 100 tear gas rounds were fired. Several injuries were also reported; from broken bones (the result of being stuck by rubber bullets), and vomiting (due to the inhalation of CS gas), to burns from the incendiary gas pellets fired.
