Updates on the campaign which began in Athens against the arrests related to the events of 1st May in Milan
In the morning of 12th November the Greek police raided 5 comrades’ homes; they are students and also active participants in the people’s assembly of Aghia Paraskevi, one of the many Athens’ neighbourhood assemblies animated by people of all sorts, youths and elderly, mothers, migrants, etc., and which originated in the years 2008/2012, when the economic crisis was biting hard and many people decided to organize themselves together in order to improve their lives.
Precisely because of this practice, just few hours after the arrests over a hundred people occupied the town hall in Agia Paraskevi, where they held a meeting with people in solidarity, the families of those arrested and their lawyers and discussed about a campaign of solidarity for the liberation of those arrested and also against their extradition to Italy, where they risk very heavy sentences whereas the charge of devastation and plunder is not included in the Greek penal code. After the public meeting a participated and heterogeneous demo took on the streets of the neighbourhood before returning to the occupied town hall.
In the morning of 13th November hundreds of people gathered outside the appeal court in Athens and demanded the liberation of 5 comrades and the immediate end of all legal persecutions against them. As a result, the comrades were released on bail, but they have to report to the police station three times weekly and cannot leave the country until the court decides on their extradition (in 10-20 days).
This is a first significant victory but it is necessary to carry on until all the comrades are free in Greece as well as in Italy.
We were all there on 1st May. Freedom for all.
