2014 NYC Anarchist Film Festival

NEW YORK, NY – The eighth annual NYC Anarchist Film Festival is Sunday May 18th, in Manhattan’s East Village. The AFF will be screening a variety of short films that celebrate the spirit of resistance and  liberation amid the increasing criminalization of dissent around the world. The AFF, is a participatory event where the screenings spark vigorous discussion about the possibilities of political change and cultural transformation.

This year’s film festival will feature works such as Anarchism in Madrid, an examination of the contemporary anarchist movement in Spain; Taksim Commune, about the uprising in Turkey; and Into the Fire, a film from Greece about the rise of neo fascist groups.  You will see many other examples of both domestic and global uprisings. From videos of Pussy Riot, to honoring daring whistle blowers scapegoated by the government, like Jeremy Hammond, Barret Brown and Chelsea Manning, the AFF will be a forum for the frontlines of resistance in the age of murder drones, with nuclear holocaust and ecological catastrophe on the horizon.

This year the AFF will take place the day before Occupy activist, Cecily McMillan’s sentencing which could carry a 7 year term for physically reacting to a sexual assault by a police officer. See the police brutality footage of McMillan being assaulted by the NYPD, the very same video Judge Ronald Zweibel prevented the jury from seeing before they convicted McMillan.

The NYC Anarchist Film Festival in Honor of Brad Will was started in 2007, after our beloved friend, activist, anarchist, and journalist, Brad Will, was murdered by a police sniper in Oaxaca, Mexico while filming a popular uprising that started as a teacher’s strike for better wages and schools. The first NYC Anarchist film festival screened Brad’s footage of a courageous resistance movement that defied violent state terrorism. We have since committed to providing a forum for global dissent against tyranny.
