The massive blaze which swept through a Merthyr coach depot, destroying numerous vehicles, was an act of arson, firefighters have said.

In a statement today, the South Wales Fire and Rescue service said “the cause of the fire is still unknown but has been deemed as a deliberate fire”.

The fire swept through the First Call coaches transport depot and yard at Pant Industrial Estate, Merthyr Tydfil, from 1am on Sunday, December 28.

About 30 coaches and minibuses were destroyed in the blaze. Residents reported seeing 40ft flames

The enormous blaze triggered a series of explosions.

The coaches were parked very close together, partly as a security measure to prevent anyone trying to steal fuel or batteries and parts.

Describing the scene, Dewi Jones from South Wales Fire Service told BBC Wales: “There’s total devastation.
