This Saturday sees the “March for Homes”, the first big London street demo for some time. The housing issue touches to the quick of social unease in our city right now, and there is plenty of potential for this to get interesting, as several thousand renters and riffraff come out on the streets.

There are obvious negatives: this is being organised by SWP front “Defend Council Housing”, with big league support from Unite the Union, financial backers of the Labour Party and the pointless “People’s Assembly”. There will be a gaggle of Labour MPs about, and a finish-line podium with speeches.

But can they hold back the mob? Several unofficial blocs have been called, and with a bit of luck won’t be so easily controlled.

We are plugging the Squat Bloc, which is being cobbled together by assorted squatter crews. See call-out below. Latest: the main squat bloc meet up will be at Elephant & Castle at 12 noon: St Mary’s Churchyard, Newington Butts, SE1 6SQ. Though there will certainly also be squatters on the East London march, which starts from St Leonards Church, Shoreditch High Street, also at noon. There is also a short “accessible route” meeting at 1:30PM meet point at Potters Field St, SE1 2AA.

Other announced blocs include:

** “Love Activist Black Bloc”, also starting from Elephant (fakebook event)

** “March for free Education” student bloc, also starting from Elephant (facebook event)

** Aylesbury Estate Tenants First feeder march to the Elephant, starting 11 AM

** Feminist bloc, starting from Shoreditch

** FocusE15 on the East London March

And no doubt plenty more stuff.
