Anti-Fascist Network Antifascism in the UK
About 100 EDL only marched through Walthamstow on Saturday with the help of a gigantic police operation. A thousand anti fascists of all sorts turned out to oppose the racist march through this multicultural area. Some gathered at the Town Hall, the end, rally, point of the EDL march, while others tried to block the route at the beginning of the march near Blackhorse Road station. Here, police detained a large group of anti fascists for several hours but luckily changed their minds about arresting everyone, for nothing.
As the EDL shuffled along inside their police cordon, they met with opposition everywhere they went. The far-right group’s attempts to distance themselves from neo-nazi groups were destroyed as some on their march were last seen with the National Front in Dover (earlier this year), one even seig-heiling on the march. A few fascists wandered around outside the cordon looking to cause trouble but without success.
Such a miserable showing from the EDL merely demonstrated to us that maybe they are as fed up as we are of their drunken, intimidatory invasions of our towns. With a concerted effort to organise and get out on the streets, we have a real possibility of putting this group out of business altogether, especially in the south. Well done to all who joined in on Saturday. The next EDL national demo is in Sheffield on 4th July – watch this space for more info.
