Brian Vaillancourt, a long-time animal rights activist and vegan, was arrested last year on suspicion of trying to burn down a slaughterhouse known as “McDonald’s” in Chicago, IL. Brian was charged with Aggravated Arson, the most serious felony offense in Illinois, short of first degree murder. Because Brian cannot afford a defense attorney, he was assigned a public defender, who does not have the time or expertise to effectively represent him. Brian recently accepted a 9 year plea deal out of fear that he would receive the maximum 30 year sentence if he went to trial with the public defender representing him.
