The Kuala Lumpur Zine Fest (KLZF) is an independent event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers together with zinesters, zine distros, carfters and artist to showcase their work. Our goal is to make DIY zine-making accessible, highlight the talents of self-published artists, and give independent artists a chance to interact, and swap skills through tabling, community events, and workshops.

This year event will be the forth (6th) year and will be on the Saturday, 19th December 2015. The KLZF is FREE & open to the public featuring writers and artists showcasing their self-published magazines and artworks.

The event has a festival atmosphere, like a craft fair but with printed matter.  Browse the tables, flip through some zines, meet the people behind them & discover something new!

KLZF are a great place to learn something new, get inspired, discuss, interact, meet friends, connect with local writers and get involved with various forms of accessible media. Our exhibitors create all kinds of zines to showcase their writing, illustration, photography, interviews, cooking, and any & everything else they’d like to share with the world.

WHAT’S A ZINE?

A zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine; pronounced “zeen”) is a magazine or booklet that you make yourself, and give away, swap or sell for the cost of printing. What’s the point? To share your knowledge or your feelings or your experiences in a way that’s more tangible than blogging, less commercial and more immediate than print media. The focus is usually on content, but designs, styles and print methods vary widely and can look very interesting and unusual! With short runs, some zinesters have the time to hand print covers, sew bindings, or colour in pages individually.

According to the Anchor Archive Zine Library, “Zines are self-published magazines made outside of mainstream press and media, by all kinds of people about all kinds of things.” Basically, if you’ve got an interest, someone is probably making a zine about it!

A rough guide:

Zinester – someone who makes, reads, enjoys, trades, celebrates zines and zine culture.

Perzines – a portmanteau word for ‘personal zine’ – zines that are diarylike in style, and can explore serious issues and represent unique points of view.

Fanzine – traditionally, a zine that’s all about something you’re a fan of, from music to football.

Instructional zines – these teach you how to do something and are really handy!

Comic-zines – any category above, but done in a part drawn/part written format.
