I am Noel Regachuelo, a designer and a community member of Grandview Heights Subd., Pacol Naga City Philippines., It is my noble intent to actively respond to the needs of our community, particularly, those of the youth and the children who deserves to be well-nourished in mind, body and soul.

In this regard, I am proposing a community food garden and a basic library project at the open section of the land on the left side of the basketball court and day care center of GVH community.

Why is the project needed?

The main objectives of the community food garden are;

1.) To encourage and build awareness among homeowners, especially the youth about the importance of sustainable organic gardening;
2.) To provide livelihood and direct access to organic vegetables for the GVH community;
3.) To help alleviate hunger, malnutrition and poverty;
4.) To inspire communities to start their own food garden, and promote the importance of organic food not only as a basic necessity for survival but for the sustenance of health and wellness for everyone.

The basic community library on the other hand is primarily to advocate and uphold the right of every child or youth to literacy and social awareness through:

1.) Free space for learning and information; (art workshop, film screening etc.)
2.) Open and easy access to books and other reading materials (Children’s books, magazines, newspapers etc.) in GVH.

Why do we need to establish this project now?

Considering the proliferation of unhealthy and costly food products in the market, we, as a community, must join our efforts to provide healthier and more abundant food sources for the basic sustenance of our families. The community organic garden would ensure us of a more sustainable food supply and likewise encourage community participation and direct action among our members to fight against poverty and unhealthy lifestyle.

The basic community library would be of great help to the children and the youth in their quest for true learning, in the midst of useless information made available to them by the media and the limited exposure they get in schools.

Who will be served by this project?

The community food garden will benefit GVH home owners in general. However, the basic community library will not only cater to the children and youth members of GVH but would extend its services to the students enrolled in the day care center, elementary and high school operating near GVH.

What are needed to pursue and realize this project?

Following the concept of “bayanihan” or “mutual-aid”, this project would greatly rely on the benevolence of sponsors who would provide the funding necessary to set up the community garden and basic library in the area. Likewise, it would need the kindness of volunteers, who are willing to share their talents and skills, as well as their free time and energy, for the project to run well and serve its purpose.

In this connection, may I appeal therefore for your support  so that we can come together in realizing this meaningful project, not only for ourselves, but more significantly for the next generation in our community.
