Nature has not always existed. It is not found in the depths of the forest, in the heart of the cougar or in the songs of the pygmies; it is found in the philosophies and image constructions of civilized human beings. Seemingly contradictory strands are woven together creating nature as an ideological construct that serves to domesticate us, to suppress and channel our expressions of wildness. Au lecteur, Notre amie et associée Andréa apprend en 1985 qu’elle a le cancer. Après opération, rayons et chimiothérapie, elle n’a plus espoir de guérir. En octobre 1990, on lui propose un traitement expérimental ; elle met alors à exécution une décision qu’elle avait prise depuis longtemps, celle de rompre radicalement avec le milieu hospitalier et médical, cela pour garder l’initiative de sa fin. Elle écrit deux lettres, l’une aux infirmières, l’autre à son amie Bella. Son choix est fait.
