It is true that when you succeded Mr. Athanasiou as Minister of Justice, many prisoners hoped that things in Greek prisons would change. A hope was born that at last a framework would be created allowing prisoners some space to breathe. The fact that prisoners have no agency and are stripped off their rights, the fact that they have taken on the role of the scapegoat in contemporary Greek society that is characterized by policies derived from memorandums, is not enough reason for our lives and our families’ lives to be plundered. Osman Evcan gained the victory from the determined struggle in which he put his life against the state inside the thick walls of prison which he is enclosed. Osman, got everything he demanded through this hard period without surrendering to the state. Osman Evcan ended his indefinite hunger strike which took 45 days against intimidation, torture and extermination politics against prisoners and again he proved us that how he is right about his call to raise the struggle. He continued his resistance resolutely by choosing to die with honor and this is the only reason why his demands are accepted. The State’s “punishment” system and their officials that made comrade Osman Evcan suffer hunger for 45 days and tortured him are our enemies. The recognized demands of Osman Evcan are not a matter of grace, instead that is the end of torturous practices. Torture is a state policy. He is grateful to everyone who have held demonstrations, spoken up, and gave support for Osman Evcan’s cause. Osman Evcan is now trying to get over the adverse effects of the hunger strike process, and his present health condition is fine. We will share the message from Osman Evcan soon.

We are subjected to the coercive condition of confinement which has been imposed on us and as a result we are deprived of the greatest good that freedom is. Every day we encounter a plethora of problems that remain unresolved since nobody proceeds to identify them, listen to them and provide a solution in order to stop them from perpetuating. The responsibility for the inhumane conditions of detention prevalent inside correctional facilities as a whole, lies with the Ministry of Justice which systematically refuses to listen and recognize these problems and as a result refuses to resolve them. Prison managers are called to fulfill a position without having satisfied the relevant job requirements or show complete reluctance to resolve these issues and treat prisoners with authoritarianism since they try to force their decisions upon them.
