LOS ANGELES – NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE – VIOLENT REVOLT

L’ANTECEDENTE

Il 4 marzo scorso, le principali reti televisive americane trasmettevano un significativo filmato che mostrava quattro agenti bianchi in borghese del Dipartimento di polizia di Los Angeles intenti a infierire brutalmente con bastoni, manici di pistola e calci sul giovane nero Rodney King che giaceva esangue a terra vicino ad un’auto. Il filmato, girato casualmente con una video camera dall’operatore dilettante George Hollyday, pubblica statunitense, attraverso i teleschermi, la realtà di ciò che si è trasformata la guerra contro il crimine e il narcotraffico proclamata da rambo Bush in ogni angolo degli USA.

ANIMAL LIBERATION: THE MOVIE

Animal Liberation: The Movie (1992, England)

An early and wonderful example of DIY video production and anonymous distribution, Animal Liberation: The Movie was brought to the US by Freeman Wicklund in the early 90s. Often sold on the same tape as the moving Kieth Mann documentary “Angels of Mercy,” it quickly became a must have in the video collection of activists everywhere.

Documenting the high-water mark of daylight raids, department store arson, hunt sabotage, and undercover investigations in England, this sub-rosa video remains one of the best catalogs of direct action in the 80s and early 90s.

Rivalutazione della polizia

La concezione moderna della polizia, per quanto strano possa sembrare, è tale proprio perché regge un significato restrittivo, cioè si chiude all’interno della pubblica sicurezza, della sicurezza dei cittadini. Oggi si parla di polizia proprio perché è diventato possibile staccare un’attività politica di natura differente, cioè come organizzazione del potere statale in senso più ampio e sufficientemente astratto. Non è senza interesse guardare all’evolversi di questa distinzione, anche perché essa potrebbe avere ormai fatto il suo tempo e si potrebbero ripresentare, come di fatto si annunciano, tentativi di accorpamento tra le due attività di potere.

“Society…1. a group of persons who have the same customs, beliefs, etc. or live under a common government and who are thought of as forming a single community… 3. all people, when thought of as forming a community in which each person is partly dependent on all the rest”.

Nothing we “know” can be assumed to be true- none of our conceptions of the world are sacred and we would do well to question them all. Many anarchists talk about creating a “new” or “free” society. But few question the idea of society itself. The conception of society is amorphous- and so more difficult to deal with than particular aspects of it like government, religion, capitalism or technology. It is so ingrained in us that questioning it feels like questioning our very nature- which makes it all the more necessary to question it. Freeing ourselves from the character armor that represses our desires and passions may very well demand, not merely the transformation of society, but its abolition. The dictionary definitions above show society to be a single entity made up of individuals who are in a condition of (at least potential) dependency upon each other- which is to say, who are not complete in themselves. I see society as a system of relationships between beings who are acting (or being treated) as social roles in order to reproduce the system and themselves as social individuals.

The Southern Desert Correctional Center (SDCC) is located in open, arid desert, forty miles north of Las Vegas and just twenty-eight miles south of the U.S. nuclear test site at Mercury, Nev. Inmates joke that it will require but one significant mathematical mistake and we will all disintegrate and dissolve into desert dust. At night, a pack of coyotes, on their way to the institution’s garbage dump, pause at the prison’s perimeter, staring through the barbed wire at the even stranger creatures inside.
