Io so chi ha ucciso il commissario Luigi Calabresi, il 17 maggio 1972, sotto casa sua, in via Cherubini 6, a Milano, alle nove e un quarto del mattino.
L’affermazione è grave, non per le implicazioni giudiziarie, per carità, delle quali non mi curo minimamente, ma per ben altri motivi, ed è di questi motivi che voglio mettere a parte i miei attenti lettori.

Lecce, Italy – Sentence of the Nottetempo appeal trial (9th December 2010)

As usually goes with the justice of the system, things turned badly for the comrades on trial: not only have some of the requests of the public prosecutor been accepted but those who had been acquitted in the first grade of the trial have also been charged.
The story is by now well known. Operation Nottetempo started in May 2005 when searches were carried out all over Italy and five comrades from Lecce were arrested and detained for almost two years in preventive arrest. The main reason for this judicial operation against anarchists was the tenacious struggle the comrades had undertaken against the notorious detention centre for immigrants Regina Pacis (which eventually closed down also thanks to that struggle), run by the church and situated in Salento (Lecce), the southernmost area of the Puglia region (southern Italy).

« La taule était juste sur l’allée Petxina, dans le vieil édifice qu’on aperçoit : La prison Modelo à Barcelone, ok ? Il y avait aussi des émeutes, les gens qui s’y intéressaient et l’entendaient accourraient immédiatement. La tactique la plus utilisée était de grimper sur les toits pour y déployer une banderole, et foutre le feu à la taule, ce qui était joli à voir. Ça pour ceux de l’intérieur. Dans les rues autour de la prison, il y avait de temps en temps des affrontements avec les flics qui à l’époque chargeaient directement. On élevait des barricades, par exemple de pneus enflammés. Bon, voilà en quelque sorte l’ébauche des événements dont on est supposé causer. À partir de là, il vaut mieux que vous posiez des questions. »

The radical environmental movement along with the animal liberation struggle has often stood on the fringes of social justice movements. There was a time not to long ago when these struggles were dismissed by the larger left leaning social justice movement as non-essential. I went to prison at such a time.

“Green Scare” Defendants

The term “Green Scare,” alluding to the Red Scare of the 1940s and ’50s, refers to legal and extralegal actions taken by the U.S. government against environmental and animal rights activists. Like the Red Scare, the Green Scare uses new laws and new arms of the state to harshly punish a few individuals in order to repress an entire movement.
